Some weddings just feel good from the very start, and Abi and Tom’s December wedding at the The River Mill was exactly that. A crisp winter day, brilliant atmosphere, and two lovely families coming together for a proper celebration.
The morning began with bridal prep for Abi, her bridesmaids and both mums. The usual buzz of excitement, hair spray in the air, dresses hanging up waiting their moment, and a room gradually filling with that mix of nerves and excitement that always builds before the ceremony.
Before long it was time to head over to the River Mill. It’s a venue I always enjoy working at. It manages to feel intimate without ever feeling cramped. Everyone is together, sharing the same space throughout the day, which gives the whole celebration a great energy.
A Beautiful Winter Ceremony
The ceremony itself was lovely. The flower girls set things off perfectly as they made their way down the aisle, followed by the bridesmaids, and then Abi walked in with her dad. One of those simple, emotional moments that always lands exactly as it should.
Afterwards we stepped outside for confetti and the entrance at the River Mill is perfect for it. Guests line up, the energy ramps, and suddenly you’ve got colour, laughter and chaos in the best possible way.
Why I Love The River Mill for Photos
One of the big advantages of the River Mill (and its neighbour, The West Mill) is the location itself. The whole mill complex gives you loads of character to work with.
You’ve got the old brickwork, the riverside paths, and the little cobbled street outside the venue that always photographs beautifully. Even with the bridge (currently) closed, there’s still plenty of variety within a short walk, which makes it easy to create a set of couple photos that all feel slightly different without disappearing for ages.
A Champagne Tower Entrance
One of Abi and Tom’s personal touches came as they entered the wedding breakfast. Rather than heading straight to their seats, they kicked things off with a champagne tower, which is a brilliant way to start the evening celebrations and a moment that looked fantastic in photos.
Dinner itself was exactly what you’d expect from the River Mill: excellent food and a great atmosphere. The speeches followed, including a joint effort from the two best men which went down very well with the room.
Winter Evenings Done Right
As the evening settled in, the celebrations moved outside where guests gathered by the fire down by the river. Sparklers came out, marshmallows were toasted, and the whole thing had that cosy winter-wedding feel that’s hard to beat.
It’s one of the things I love about December weddings — when the venue leans into the season and creates those little moments that feel warm and relaxed despite the cold air.
Shooting with a Second Photographer
This wedding also had a slightly unusual twist for me personally. My wife was 39 weeks pregnant at the time, so I brought along a second photographer just in case I had to make a very quick exit if a baby decided to arrive mid-wedding.
Thankfully that didn’t happen, but it did mean we captured the day from twice as many angles. It’s always nice working alongside other photographers and seeing the day through a slightly different perspective.
A Brilliant Day All Round
From start to finish, Abi and Tom’s wedding was a great one to be part of. A beautiful venue, thoughtful touches throughout the day, and two families who clearly loved celebrating together.
