I’m Lewis, a wedding photographer based in Derby

 

This is a venue I know properly well!

The West Mill isn’t simply another venue on my calendar. I live just around the corner, previously lived in Darley Abbey and was a guest at one of the first weddings held here.


I’ve watched it become one of Derby’s best-known wedding venues, but it has never lost what makes it interesting: four floors of old brick, huge windows, industrial details and a riverside setting that feels miles away from the city.


It also works brilliantly for the way I photograph weddings. Every part of the day has its own space, but nothing feels disconnected. I can follow what’s happening naturally without constantly moving people around or interrupting the celebration.


If you’re also considering The River Mill, that’s its smaller sister venue, run by the same team and located a short walk away. I photograph weddings at both, although each has a very different feel.

Why The West Mill Works So Well in Photographs

 

The Ceremony Room Does a Lot of the Work


The Cotton Quarter sits at the top of the building, with large Georgian windows, exposed brick and plenty of natural light.


It has real presence, but the room never feels like it’s competing with the ceremony. I can photograph the important reactions—your partner waiting, family members watching and all the little glances between guests without getting in the way.


And because the light is already doing plenty of the work, the photographs can still feel natural and atmospheric without everything needing to be staged.

You Don’t Have to Disappear for Portraits


There’s plenty of variety within a few minutes of the venue.


The courtyard, riverside gardens, old brick buildings and steps all give us different options without taking you away from your guests for ages. If there’s time and you fancy a short walk, the river and The Abbey pub give us a little more to work with - providing the bridge is open!


We don’t need a complicated shot list or an hour-long portrait session. Ten relaxed minutes in good light can produce far better photographs—and then you can get back to the people you invited.

The Building Changes Throughout the Day


The West Mill feels different on every floor.


The bright ceremony space gradually gives way to the warmer atmosphere of the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations. By the time everyone reaches The Spinning Room, the polished part of the day is usually over and the dance floor starts doing its thing.


That change gives your gallery a natural sense of progression. It begins with anticipation and daylight, then gets louder, darker and considerably less sensible as the evening goes on.

What I’ll Photograph During Your West Mill Wedding


The obvious moments matter: the ceremony, confetti, family photographs, speeches and first dance. But they aren’t the whole story.


I’m also looking for everything happening around them. Someone trying not to cry during the vows. Friends seeing each other for the first time that day. A quiet conversation in the courtyard. The reaction to a speech that was either much better (or far worse) than expected.


Those unplanned moments are what make one West Mill wedding completely different from another.


We’ll still take a few photographs of the two of you, with enough guidance that you never feel abandoned in front of the camera. They’ll be relaxed, quick and built around whatever the light and weather are doing at the time.


The aim is a gallery that feels like your wedding, not a collection of photographs copied from somebody else’s.


Summer, Winter and Whatever the Derby Weather Decides


The West Mill works throughout the year.


In summer, guests can spill into the courtyard and gardens, and the evening light beside the river can be brilliant. During winter, the brickwork, windows and warm interior lighting give the photographs a completely different atmosphere.


Rain doesn’t leave us stuck for options either. The building has enough character and usable light indoors that we can adapt without turning the day into a weather-management exercise.


I’ll keep an eye on the conditions, find the right moments and let you get on with enjoying yourselves.


Why Venue Experience Actually Helps


Knowing The West Mill isn’t about taking every couple to exactly the same predetermined spot.


It means understanding how the light moves around the building, where we can go without losing half the drinks reception and what alternatives work when the weather changes. It also means knowing when a planned photograph is worth pursuing and when something better is already happening elsewhere.


Every wedding has its own pace, people and atmosphere. My familiarity with the venue lets me respond to those differences instead of relying on the same routine every time.
