The West Mill, Darley Abbey
Converted from a nineteenth century cotton mill, The West Mill is an industrial chic venue with exposed brickwork and large windows overlooking the River Derwent. Its four storey layout means you can host every part of your day in a different setting, and the top floor ceremony space is flooded with natural light – even on a short winter’s day. Because everything is indoors, there’s no need to worry about the weather. Fairy lights and candles against the brick create a wonderfully warm ambience. Stretton Manor Barn
This rustic barn near Ashover combines reclaimed stone with contemporary finishes, making it ideal for couples seeking a modern yet cosy setting. An exclusive use venue, it has a new bridal prep room and a long, scenic driveway that looks magical in frost or light snow . Inside, high ceilings and wooden beams provide the perfect backdrop for twinkling lights and seasonal décor. Guests can toast marshmallows over the outdoor fire pits while enjoying mulled wine – a highlight of the November wedding I photographed at Stretton Manor last year.
Holme Pierrepont Hall
Set in expansive parkland just outside Nottingham, Holme Pierrepont Hall is a Tudor manor with intimate rooms and Medieval lodgings. Winter ceremonies in the paneled Long Gallery feel like stepping back in time, and the walled courtyards offer sheltered spots for photos if the weather is kind. The house’s period interiors suit smaller guest lists; think roaring fires, candlelight and festive florals.
Swancar Farm Country House
This exclusive use farmhouse sits on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border and has become a favourite for winter weddings. A light filled ceremony barn, oak beamed reception space and cosy lounge areas mean you can keep warm while still enjoying rustic charm. The courtyard is perfect for sparkler exits, and onsite accommodation allows guests to settle in without braving icy roads.
Grangefields
One of Derbyshire’s newer venues, Grangefields combines contemporary design with barn elements. Its open plan layout and large windows let in soft winter light, and the neutral decor suits any colour palette. The heated outdoor terrace is great for hot chocolate stations, and the surrounding fields make for atmospheric portraits under brooding skies. Plus, I got married here! Tissington Hall
For a touch of old world elegance, Tissington Hall near Ashbourne offers manicured gardens, candlelit rooms and ornate ceilings. Winter ceremonies are held in the library or Main Hall, followed by receptions in the 18th century Carriage House. Frost on the topiary and twinkling lights create a fairy tale feel.
