The Peak District is one of those places that just gets under your skin. It’s rugged, romantic, peaceful and unpredictable all at once, and it’s right on our doorstep. Whether you’re newly married, planning a mini-moon, or just sneaking away for a weekend together, there’s nowhere quite like it.
As someone who’s lucky enough to live and work here, I’m constantly reminded how beautiful this corner of the world is. I’ll never get tired of the view driving over Winnats Pass, or the smell of woodsmoke drifting from a country pub after a long walk. So, if you’re after some inspiration for a romantic escape, here are a few of my favourite local gems.
Get outdoors together
Winnats Pass & Mam Tor
Let’s start with a classic. Just west of Castleton, this dramatic limestone valley feels like something out of a film set — especially when the morning mist hangs low. Park in Castleton, grab a coffee from The Peveril Tearooms, and hike up Mam Tor for some of the best views in the Peak District. It’s steep in places, but the payoff is huge.
Tissington Trail or Monsal Trail
If you prefer something gentler (and slightly less muddy!), the old railway trails are brilliant. I love the Tissington Trail for its peace and quiet — you can hire bikes or just stroll hand in hand through tunnels and farmland. The Monsal Trail, meanwhile, gives you those picture-perfect views from the viaduct, especially at sunset.
High Peak Trail
A bit wilder and higher up — brilliant if you want views that stretch forever. Stop for a pub lunch at The Royal Oak near Hurdlow, one of my absolute favourites for hearty, proper food.
Make it an adventure
If you’re feeling brave, try climbing at Stanage Edge or Curbar Edge. Even if you’re not a climber, just walking up there on a breezy evening feels magical — you’ll often see paragliders drifting by as the sun sets.
Or head to Carsington Water for paddleboarding or kayaking. It’s great fun and surprisingly peaceful once you’re out on the water. Afterwards, reward yourself with a meal or drink overlooking the reservoir — The Mainsail does a solid lunch.
Cosy evenings, local flavours
No Peak District escape is complete without a proper pub evening. I’m a huge fan of Thornbridge Brewery – their tap room in Bakewell is brilliant, especially if you like trying different ales. Grab a few bottles to take back to your cottage.
You can’t go wrong with The Packhorse in Little Longstone, The Bulls Head in Monyash, or The George in Alstonefield for a pub dinner that feels both relaxed and special. Think roaring fires, big portions, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger.
If you’re National Trust members (and honestly, it’s bloody brilliant value), head to Chatsworth, Lyme Park, or Ilam Park for a wander through stately grounds and a coffee with a view. Perfect slow-day energy.
Stay somewhere with character
Whether it’s a cosy cottage near Bakewell or a log cabin tucked into the hills, the best stays here always have two things: a log burner and a great view. If you can, find a spot with a hot tub under the stars — there’s nothing quite like it after a day of walking.
For a mini-moon, I’d go for somewhere like Dovedale, Hathersage, or Ashford-in-the-Water — beautiful villages with great access to walks, pubs and scenic drives.
A final thought
The beauty of the Peak District is that it’s not trying too hard. You don’t need grand plans or big itineraries. Just bring your boots, your camera, and a sense of adventure.
